I would add that Jim Andrew's own recent production for the web "On Lionel Kearns" explores this area of audience-controlled pacing in a powerful and distinctive way. It is built with Director and compiled in "shockwave" format for the web.

During the latter half of a vast and multipart work, he uses a miniature of the screen itself as a control gadget. In other words, instead of using the mouse as a tracking device over the entire screen, the viewer feedback occurs in an embedded mirror image. The mirror image metaphorically suggest the appearance of an analog feedback loop (recursive image within image within image) since this visual control device also changes dynamically as a mirror of whatever is occuring on screen.
