I would add that Jim Andrew's own recent production for the web "On Lionel
Kearns" explores this area of audience-controlled pacing in a powerful and
distinctive way. It is built with Director and compiled in "shockwave"
format for the web.
During the latter half of a vast and multipart work, he uses a miniature
of the screen itself as a control gadget. In other words, instead of
using the mouse as a tracking device over the entire screen, the viewer
feedback occurs in an embedded mirror image. The mirror image
metaphorically suggest the appearance of an analog feedback loop
(recursive image within image within image) since this visual control
device also changes dynamically as a mirror of whatever is occuring on screen.
